How to Fix Steel Water Pipe Clamps

Water pipes are held in position against walls, ceilings or support beams using clamps. These clamps contain an opening within the shape of the pipe and two holes on possibly side for securing the clamp using screws. When the clamp becomes corroded or cracked, it should be replaced with a new one to guarantee the integrity of the pipe. Steel pipe clamps are especially susceptible to this kind of damage. Inspecting and replacing damaged clamps should be a normal part of your plumbing maintenance routine.

Instructions:
  1. Insert a screwdriver into either from the two screws holding the clamp in place. Turn the screws counterclockwise until they drop free from the clamp. Repeat with the second screw.
  2. Pull the clamp from the pipe. A screwdriver may be required to gently pry the clamp from the pipe.
  3. Inspect the clamp for signs of deterioration or cracks. Remove minor rust by rubbing the steel having a fine-grit sandpaper. A severely corroded or cracked clamp ought to be replaced with a new one. If the clamp is within good condition, place it back over the pipe about an inch from the holes of the previous screws. Place two new screws to the holes on the sides of the clamp and tighten them to the wood using a screwdriver.
  4. Place a new clamp within the pipe if the old one is corroded or damaged. Screw the clamp into the wood about an inch from the holes of the prior screws.
