Australia Shows Interest In Investing In Mining

Australia has expressed interest to invest about Rs 9,000 crore in the mining sector in Orissa to set up mineral-based and space units.

"We have a proposal to invest $ 2 billion (about Rs 9,000 crore), in the mining sector in Orissa is rich in natural resources," the Australian High Commissioner to India, Peter Varghese, here today.

Varghese, who was a two-day visit to the state, said at least 85% of the mineral needs are met in Australia, through India's exports.

Australia's envoy, who met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and visited a school near here, yesterday, said resources such as aluminum, gold and coal are available in Orissa.

The Australian government wants to set up businesses in these areas in the joint venture so that both countries can enjoy the benefits.

During his meeting with the Chief Minister said Varghese he kept the discussion on mining scenario and possible projects in Orissa. Officials of the Orissa Mining Corporation (OMC) was also present at the meeting.

Joint ventures in the state would help to raise the tribes, to create jobs and provide economic development, Philip.

During his visit to the city campus of the University of Technology and Management Centurion, Varghese, highlighted significant collaborations with Australian institutions.
