Five Ways to Save Money on Tobacco

Alright. We understand. You are not going to quit. You've no intentions to quit. And you do not wish to hear those words, "you need to quit", from anyone. I am not condemning you. Sometimes people are just not able to quit smoking or simply just do not want to stop. However, nearly every tobacco user knows that the price of tobacco and cigarettes in the usa is getting increasingly expensive. This is especially true for states which have heavy tobacco taxes. So you may be asking your self: how do I save money on tobacco? How are you able to make tobacco addiction less expensive? Lucky for you, and personally, there are ways to save money on tobacco.

Choice #1: Buy pouched tobacco and hand-roll your own smoking. This piece is especially helpful if you do not have access to a favorite kind of cigarette. You can buy pouched cigarettes anywhere, from online to your local liquor store. One pouch of tobacco will definitely cost anywhere from $5 to $15 (as of 2011) and may be rolled into roughly 100 cigarettes. Think of the actual savings! So roll your own. Smoke more. And smoke cigarettes purer tobacco.

Option #2: Smoke half a cigarette each time you smoke. You will get your fix, but only smoke 1 / 2 of what you usually do. Using this method you reduce the amount you smoke in half and hence spend half the cash. This is a good method if you want to scale back a bit as well. Be sure to safe the final half of the cig!

Option #3: Buy duty free if at all possible. Do you know anyone abroad or who is heading abroad? Have them buy you a few cartons. Think about this. In 2010, I had a friend who was arriving home from Korea. I told him to get me two cartons of Marlboro Lights in the duty free airport shop in Seoul, South Korea. He or she purchased two cartons, at the price of roughly $30! You cannot beat those type of savings. So ask around, and make the most of those people who will be passing through those valuable duty free stores. If you have a friend returning from China, have him or her pick you up some tobacco in route back. Or maybe just purchase some cheap cigs through China.

Option #4: Buy in states with lower cigarettes taxes or no tobacco taxes. If you are within Ohio, go to Kentucky and purchase in bulk; it is much cheaper. If you are in Massachusetts, go to New Hampshire and get in bulk; it's much cheaper. No matter what state you're in, there is probably a state nearby that offers tax-less or low-tax tobacco available; drive there and create a wholesale purchase. It will save you a lot of money over time.

Option #5: Buy cheaper tobacco brands. Okay. I know this really is tough, especially if you are hooked on one type. But purchasing deals on cigarettes such as buy one get one can help you save money. Take advantage of such deals, and don't be too picky by what you smoke. It's all tobacco in the end.
